Before you begin: Hanon teaching chapter
Use the teaching chapter for worked examples and practice variations.
This reference contains the complete ascending and descending routes of
all twenty exercises, including their turning points and final notes. It
prints one pass; the source’s repeat may be taken before the closing
note. Each exercise continues across two pages.
Fingers printed here are those explicitly supplied in the source;
unnumbered notes are not omissions to fill by guessing from a scale
fingering. Establish the repeating hand pattern from the marked measures
and the teaching examples. The descent often changes the figure. Work
slowly at the transition before joining the two directions.
Read the register before
starting
RH and LH labels remain attached to their respective staves. Clefs
can change at a system boundary as the hands travel. An
8va line means to sound the written notes an octave
higher; its end restores the written octave. These changes affect the
notation, not the source pitches.
Do not treat twenty exercises as a mandatory daily endurance routine.
Select a short passage for a specific goal, use a comfortable tempo and
dynamic, and stop for pain or strain. A brief, attentive session is more
useful than completing the collection without listening.
Source and adaptation
Hanon, The Virtuoso Pianist, Part I, Schirmer (1900),
transcribed by Charles David Taylor and revised by David J. Ruiz-Alma:
Mutopia
2037. The adapted notation is CC BY-SA 4.0. Full
source files are retained with the project. This layout keeps each hand
on its own staff, replaces cross-staff layout with clefs/octave lines,
and omits the source’s tempo and dynamic directions for use with the
book’s practice instructions.
